Winter is here and if you can’t beat it….write about it! Or have your kindergarten or first graders write about it! Here are three winter writing activities to take advantage of all those frosty days.
Label it! Winter
Labeling a picture is a great writing activity for the wide range of writers we all have in our classrooms. The range can be especially evident this time of year when some of our little learners are off and writing and others are still… emerging! These labeling pages have enough scaffolds for our emergent writers, with room to grow for our more independent students. Students can label and write independently or use word boxes, cut & paste labels and word cards for support. This set is filled with 25 winter themed pages.

Winter Class Books
I am a huge fan of class books for so many reasons! If you aren’t familiar with class or collaborative books they are simply a book that each student in your class contributes a page to. When I first started using them I thought of them as primarily a writing activity but what surprised me was….. they ended up being the most read books in my class! What a great way to make your students feel like real writers. By this time of year my students had made enough class books that I was able to add it as an independent activity to our literacy stations. I just added in the word cards to help scaffold those kiddos who need help with ideas and spelling.

Winter Write the Room
If there is any time of year that you need to give your kiddos a chance to get up and move around… winter would be it! Not sure this applies to all of you but winter and indoor recesses went together kinda like hot chocolate and marshmallows for me teaching in Northern Canada. Writing while moving around… definitely a good idea! If you want your students writing more than just the words this set also has pages for writing sentences and a story.

Writing about personal experiences is the best place for our writers to begin. So while there are snowmen to be built and snowsuits to be worn… winter is a great topic for making those personal connections and writing about it!
