Looking for some winter themed math activities for your kindergarten or first grade students? Here are 3 math activities that will keep your students learning and having fun this winter!
Adding holiday or seasonal themes to your math activities make them more engaging and relevant to your students. Here are 3 fun math resources with a winter theme I used in my classroom.
Pocket Chart Game
Forget the flash cards… this pocket chart game is a fun way to make sure your students can identify their numbers. The game is so simple but my kiddos always loved it! Read the little poem at the top and ask a student to identify a number. Call them up to peek and see if they found the hidden winter object. Play until the hidden object it found and then play again! Believe me… they always want too! It is a perfect activity to have on hand when you have a few minutes to fill between classes or before recess. This set includes numerals to 20 and ten frames 1-20 (alphabet & sight words too). Lots of ways to play! Even more if you want to customize the editable cards included.

Number Puzzles
This is activity was a constant in my math centers all year long! I just switched up the puzzles with the seasons and holidays. This winter set has 12 puzzles and focuses on the numbers 1-20. They are editable so they can be easily programmed for the exact numbers you are working on. The puzzles can be used in 2 different ways.
- Cut and laminated. These puzzles can be used again & again in a math center or station. Recording sheets are included so that students can practice printing the numbers from their puzzle.
- Black & White. Students color, cut and assemble and glue onto paper. I actually included both versions in my Math Puzzles center and students choose the version they wanted to do.

Math Matches
This was another math activity that I used all year long. I had a tub of these for fast finishers. I just changed them out regularly. They picked a set and started matching… numbers, ten frames, base ten, number words, addition/subtraction, shapes and more! The set includes numbers 1-20 but I always started the year using the numbers to 10 and added in the teens as the year progressed . My students loved spreading them out on the carpet or matching them up in a pocket chart (they loved this so much I ending up hanging up pocket charts all around my room for them to work on!).

These were 3 three activities I used through out the year that my students never tired of. Simply change out the themes throughout the year. Adjusting the level and topics make them engaging and relevant all year long! Try one of them out in your classroom!
